Darmbakterien wie Bifidobakterien, Laktobazillen, Faecalibacterium und Akkermansia besiedeln vor allem den Dickdarm. Sie vergären Ballaststoffe und Schleimzucker zu kurzkettigen Fettsäuren wie Acetat, Propionat und Butyrat, die Darmzellen als Brennstoff und Signal nutzen.

Der Weg Schritt für Schritt
- Ballaststoffe → Laktat und Acetat Glykosidasen Bakterielle Glykosidasen spalten die langen Ketten in Zuckerbausteine; die Gärung führt zu Milchsäure, Acetat und Gasen. Quelle 1, 2
- Laktat und Acetat → Butyrat Butyryl-CoA-Transf. Butyrat-Bildner übernehmen Acetat und Laktat aus der Nachbarschaft — dieses Weiterreichen heißt Cross-Feeding. Das Enzym Butyryl-CoA:Acetat-CoA-Transferase liefert dabei den letzten Schritt. Quelle 1, 5
- Butyrat → Zellen der Darmwand β-Oxidation · Monocarboxylat-Transp. Die Zellen der Dickdarmschleimhaut nehmen Butyrat auf und verbrennen es in ihren Mitochondrien. Es deckt einen großen Teil ihres Energiebedarfs. Quelle 3, 1
